I have a 2002 Nissan Xterra and the steering wheel makes a knocking/ rattling sound when I hit bumps and pot holes in the street. The steering wheel doesnt feel loose but it does slightly slide up and down if I pull on it. Anyone else have this issue? Anyone know if there are bearings or something I could replace to fix this issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated, it is kind of a loud sound when it happens. Also I live in Chicago and avoiding all pot hole and bumps is also impossible.

i’d imagine there’s some bolts that hold the column to the dash frame, pull your kick panel below the column and take a peek. i’ve never worked on an xterra, but maybe something’s loose.

I agree with EF2...
Pop the hood and trace the steering column up to the steering wheel. I’m thinking there’s nuts and bolts that make up the steering column. |

on the HB's if you start hearing some thuds, horn going off etc, it was a rubber piece that broke off, Haven't come across issues on the "X"... yet
