Default Permanent fix: D21 dash - electronic speedo/odometer

Hi everyone,

I mentioned this in another thread, but feel it deserves it's own thread.

On later model D21/pickups with the electronic speedometer (mines as 96), the speedometer and odotmoter would randomly start and stop working as i drove. Sometimes smacking the dash would work, sometimes not. Also pushing in the trip button would make it work for a split second.

The culprit is the 4 screws that back out over time when you go over bumps. 4 center screws: https://ibb.co/SP4btTQ I know the speedometer wasn't bad as whenever I tightened the screws it worked fine for a month. Then it would stop working and I'd take it apart and the screws could be turned a quarter again.

I also did this to all the other screws for good measure... but I'm fairly positive at it is just the 4 centre screws.

These screws form a connection - see image of the metal threads: https://ibb.co/z2SNjyF

DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN or you'll strip the threads. There are videos on YouTube documenting this process. It look like the same dash-cluster as in altimas, etc.

But anyways I got tired of this not being a permanent fix, so I wanted a conductive ( so as to not impede the connection) thread-locker. So i found this product on amazon for about $10 (https://ibb.co/M2FfZZY) It's a conductive paint/glue. Due to the thin plastic printed circuit board, i don't think you could solder this... which is why i wanted a glue/threadlocker that didn't insulate.

So anyways, I put this on the lower threads: https://ibb.co/fdbHzPc
And on the circuit board where the washer goes on top: https://ibb.co/sgVPFq8 the product is dark black
Then quickly put the screw in before it could dry.

It's been several months now, and it appears to have been enough to stop is from backing out slightly and losing connection.

Hopefully this cheap and quick fix helps others before they go down the dashcluster swap route or try and replace the speedometer.

Probably at least as bad as a Jeep so worse than a cow.

You should be better off with this other sticky:

Tally's How-To: Fix your speedometer cable

Yeah, 94-97. Some 93s. So the instruction won’t apply to you. See the stick on the mechanical speed sensor.

Given that’s it’s free and easy to remove the cluster to see, start there.

The Speedo and odometer are connected. If the speedo stops, the odometer won’t work.
