Yep, the toughest part by far is the upper starter bolt. Get that one out of the way first. There are a couple of ways to get to it. Either go through the wheel well with a long socket extension and a swivel joint or come up in front of the starter with a 6" extension and a long flex head ratchet. It's not a bad job at all.

Denso rebuilt starter is the best

just did it, took about an hour maybe. that top bolt was a bastard lol, but itís done. truck starts so smooth now. next time i have to change it, it should be a lot smoother since i know what to do this go around.

I just dug through my files -- in 1998 I replaced mine, and it is still going strong. Was an Autozone #018281 17037 (1990 KA24E 4WD), but I don't remember if it was rebuilt or new. $150 back then! Plus a $60 core charge. Looks as if I replaced the ground strap at the same time (#095959 LCS14E, also from AZ).
