Default 1996 Possible manual transmission issue 4cyl manual

The truck would struggle to take off , it would rev up but would struggle to take off from a starting position , on red lights etc , once it took off it could maintain speed and even go up to 4-5th gear but would struggle to go past 60mph , there was no issue changing gears only the over revving to make it take off. I think they messed it up because now it won’t take off even with over revving

Is this a transmission that went bad? Could it be that it leaked transmission fluid ?

My dad is telling me to check by taking off the screw on the side of the transmission to check the level.

Could this be a clutch issue ?

Sounds like your clutch is all used up.

Have it replaced or replace it yourself? Labor is expensive. The parts are cheap. Have the clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing replaced. Have the flywheel inspected. It might need resurfacing or replacement.

To have a shop do the work, estimate about 2k.

If you do the work, $150ish. If you do it at home its easier to have a 2nd person there and you will be on your back if you don't have a lift.

It sounds like your clutch has bit the dust.

If you do the job yourself you'll save a lot of money. If you do it, get a complete clutch kit to include the pilot bearing and a rear main seal. When I did mine I just bought a new flywheel rather than fiddle with getting the old one inspected or resurfaced. They don't cost much new.

Rock Auto is my favorite place to buy aftermarket parts.

to be clear, when you let out the clutch would the motor just swing to the redline or are you saying you had to kinda, drag-launch it or clutch drop to leave a stop light at a reasonable speed?

its a 96 with an 1988 designed single cam 4cyl. its slower than fuck. this is the exact truck i have. its slow. ive seen high school cross country runners that could out 60ft me.

Yes. Sounds like your clutch disk is wasted. Your shifting is okay so it isn't the tranny. And hardbody trannies are pretty tough. This is clutch problem.

Someone back there said maybe $2,000. I will differ with that. Call your local known tranny shops and ask. A bit less than half that amount is more typical, at least where I live.

I had the clutch replaced on my 1998 Frontier, 2WD, 4-cylinder, 5-speed about 5 years ago. With a new flywheel, total cost was $700. Independent shop, Arizona.

Also replace your clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder. All the parts should cost around $250 or less .clutch kit new fly wheel, master cyl ,slave cyl 3 bottles of redline mt 90.labor at auto shop would be 4 to 6 hours max.buy the parts online. If you don't provide the shop with mt 90 gear oil they will pump gl5
