Question Rough idle/misfire on idle and low rpm

So I bought a 91 hardbody about 3 weeks ago, all was great until one day after getting off the highway it all of a sudden starts chugging hard, the more gas I give the more it chugs. Pull over, idles rough all of a sudden. start back up and am able to drive somewhat regularly to work about a mile away.

Leave for lunch and it does the same thing after about 1/4 mile.Leave to go home and it lets me drive fine on the way home (took streets this time).

Anyways, I pull my codes, and get a code 12 for maf, buy and install a new maf, nothing, just as bad. I've checked for vacuum leaks, but didnt find anything.

My idle is crazy rough right now with misfires all over the place, doesn't die on it's own but bogs down a good bit.

Any help is very appreciated, thanks!

No other codes at this time?

Only time Ive had a rough idle was when I had vacuum leaks. Ive had other vehicles that lost time and had a rough idle.

Id be tempted to check and make sure its getting spark everywhere if no other codes.

Yup I'm gonna pull my plugs and look at the spark once it gets dark, and nope, flashed 55 after I installed maf.

Interesting. Hmm. I wonder if its getting enough fuel. Keep us posted what you find with spark. Id also check timing with a timing light and check to see if the cam jumped a tooth or so. Any timing chain rattle?

A little on start up but after oil pressure hits the hydraulic tensioner it's fine. I was thinking ignition timing maybe but I dont have crazy losss of power. I'm looking for -10btdc right?

Maybe a cylinder head temp sensor? Might be worth hitting it with a meter to resistance. Check JP2Code's and Sifi's signatures for a PDF of the FSM. Should have the values for the temp sensor.

Im not overly familiar with the KA.

Id look into doing the timing chain and tensioner soon if its got rattle.

Check for cracks in the plastic between the MAF and the engine. If any air is able to get past the MAF, the ECU cannot monitor it correctly and will throw the code.

If all of that is ok, look for bad wiring. My truck has a frayed wire going to the MAF connector. Sometimes it will lose the connection and I have to wiggle the wires.

There's a sticky around here somewhere about a part of the wiring harness that sometimes goes bad and can cause that problem.

I had a similar issue with my VG30i that was caused by a bad ground. It's been so many years I don't remember exactly where it was and it'd probably be different on the KA anyway but that's something to keep in mind.

mind.
FIX: erratic idle, low speed driveability, possibly more
