Default 1993 D21 Base Model Speaker Placement

Recently purchased a 1993 D21 2.4L MT base model standard cab truck. The truck came with an aftermarket radio installed but no speakers that I can see.

The door cards have an armrest, no pockets, and some type of rectangular vent grille. No holes for speakers in the door. By the way does anyone know why they put a vent in the door?

There are two holes on both sides of the sheet metal in the back side of the truck. Nothing is in them. I’m guessing speakers used to be there but the holes look small. Does anyone know what size speakers go there?

What do most people do when adding speakers to these trucks? Cut holes in the door cards? Do people put speakers in back if so what size and placement?

Thanks for any info.

The vents are there so the door will shut easily.

From what I’ve seen, most people whose trucks weren’t equipped with speakers just cut the door panels. You can fit a 6 1/2” up to 2 1/16” deep if screwed to the metal. You can add another 1/8” or so if you mount on top of the door panel.

There are several door panels for hardbodies. From no stereo XE to SE models. Speaker holes should already be in the door. But no that high as in the first picture.

no stereo (owner cut holes for the speaker)

XE with stereo

SE with stereo

SE with stereo with PW/PDL

Thanks everyone for all of the info.

What about back speakers? Did they mount in the holes of the sheet metal at the back sides of the truck? If so what size speakers?

Or did the standard cab trucks not have back speakers?

Std cabs did not have back speakers or speakers in the b-pillar.

My D21 is an XE model and the second photo is the exact door panel and color. Nice photo!

My '89 D21 was an "E" model(Base). No stereo or speakers. I used Kenwood 6.5" 2-way speakers mounted on top of the door panel for a bit more room for the bass to come through a bit more. Kenwood pull out cassette deck too!

DVD thanks for the info. Do you know what the holes in the back pillars are for? See blue circle in the pic. These are normally covered up with the seat belts.

On my former 93 (king cab) I installed a 6.5" Morel midrange in the door, I had to use a spacer I made from wood for clearance. Pic below:

Its a vent. Nissan is a big believer on vents because the vehicle are sealed really well. On the outside back of cab is a one-way vent which leads to the b-pillar vent pictured. These are there so when you close the door with the windows up/recirculation on the air pocket created has a place to escape.

My vents must be clogged since Day 1 !

I can NEVER leave my windows fully rolled up and close the door(s) without the door not completely latching. I have been accustomed to leaving my driver window cracked forever and a day. Not a biggie. I’ve locked my keys inside and the cracked window allows me to put a metal clothes hanger in and pull up on the manual door lock.
