Default 1986 1/2 d21 motor swap

The motor in my 86 1/2 finally died and after a couple weeks of head scratching I've decided to swap for a 93 ka24e. I can buy entire truck running for 500 so everything I might need will be there. I haven't looked at other truck too much so the only worry I have is will the 86 wire harness plug right into 93 motor and will 93 computer plug into 86 wire harness. Any help is much appreciated

Hi Lilfoot,
I also have an 86.5 truck, and if I recall correctly, there are differences in the two engines and the ECMs do not swap from the Z24 to the KA. This will lead you to pulling the whole harness out of your donor, but I can say for sure its not as much work as you would think.

I bought my truck as a project that someone else had given up on. I had to take the truck down to no interior to rewire it for a stalled round dash swap, and pathfinder door update, and fix a whole host of other wiring related debauchery to get the truck to run.

These trucks are pretty modular in their construction, so pull the seat on your donor and unbolt the ECM and begin removing the harness. Most of the harness will run out through the grommet on the passenger firewall (to the engine), the few other wires will run over to the key.
If you wanted to you could just pull the whole harness from the headlights to the plug that leaves the cab for the taillights(a lot of work) but that would just replace your original harness(plug-n-play style). If you want to save some work you could just pull the same harness from your truck up to the firewall grommet and splice a few wires from your old harness to the donor......Be sure you confirm the wiring with the Factory Service Manual(FSM) to identify the IGN and BATT and any others that will need to be spliced(preferably soldered and heatshrunk) .....JP2Code used to have them in his signature.....

Its a totally do-able swap but it is not plug-and-play as far as I know.
Good luck, let us know how it goes.

If you want to go MPFI you'll have to swap the wiring harness too. If you stay TBI you might be able to get away with the same ECM and harness as long as the intake plenum bolts on.

The Z24i has 2-plugs per cylinder. I don't think the head design is similar to what the KA24e engine uses.

Do not try to do this unless you are a real expert with Nissans. I'm not bad but even I wouldn't try it. You have two choices here.

Buy a matching motor setup for the 86.5.

Upgrade to a newer truck with the KA. Trust me. You do not want to take on the headache you are considering. You would be better off with another truck rather than doing that.

How much work was it? How would you describe the difficulty level?
