The belt only goes on one way. There are 40 teeth on the belt between the 2 camshaft pulleys, and 43 teeth on the belt between the driver's side camshaft pulley and the crankshaft mark.

If those are correct, you may have something else going on. A backfire is often caused by a vacuum leak or bad distributor position from the Ignition Timing.

Is your Ignition Timing correctly set to 14 TDC using a Timing Light? To set the timing, you would connect a timing light, loosen the bolt on the distributor and turn it slightly to get the Ignition Timing so that it blinks when the mark on the Harmonic Balancer is at the 14-degree mark.

Here is a video on how to set the Ignition Timing (on a 4-cylinder, but the principle is the same):

Thanks for the reply. I counted the teeth in between the sprockets and the crank pulley and everything checks out. One thing on my engine is I cant set the timing, on the 87 you can and the 89 but not the 88

With the V6 setting ignition timing at the distributor is the same from 86.5-97+. VG30, VG33, doesn't matter. It's the same. I have a 86.5 distributor in my VG33 out of a Japanese pathfinder.

My fault I thought I read somewhere that on the 88 VG30I you could not adjust the timing. Ill go back and look it over to see if I can adjust that distributor.

It should have one bolt at the base that fixes it.

When you loosen the bolt, the distributor will twist slightly. Don't loosen the bolt until you are ready to set the timing.

I always like to leave a little tension so I cannot twist it too far too easily and that I can play with it with the truck running.

I want to say 12BTDC is where the VG30i is supposed to be set.

Yeah 12 is correct. 15 is better though.

Someone took apart your harmonic balancer and put it back together wrong. You'll either have to kentucky windage it with the distributor cap off (the brush should be just past the #1 cylinder's post at TDC) or take apart the harmonic balancer and put it back together aligned correctly.
