I wish more people would leave large gaps between boards. It's ridiculous they still build brand new decks with almost no gap for rain, snow, dirt, leaves or pine needles to fall through! I've spent many hours digging debris out of deck cracks before refinishing. Of course depending on your deck location, you don't want to be crawling on your belly to get a dropped screw from a project you are working on. Have to think ahead in that case and have an outdoor rug maybe.
