Alright. I've got good spark and the injectors are firing. As far as water in the tank... I removed the fuel line after the fuel filter and let it pump to check for fuel pressure, and it was definitely pumping gas. I didn't have an 8 mm socket when I went back to work on it, so i was unable to check the timing. But at this point that's what's i'm thinking the issue must be. I will check it out today and report back. If it happens to be in time, what the hell else could this be?

If it jumped time hopefully the valves are OK.

I am here at the truck again, and I BELIEVE the timing looks good. I have no way to rotate the crank without taking a bunch of shit off, but the marks on each cam are 23 teeth away from the marks on the timing cover. So. unless the belt slipped off the crank gear, it seems to be in time. I'm going to replace the coolant temperature sensor I guess, but I doubt that is the real issue. Does anyone else have any suggestions as far as diagnostics?

Grab the crank pulley and spin the motor. Loosen the spark plugs to make it easier.

I want to say the key on the crank has to be strait up but it's been a while since I've been in there. Your 89 should have a mark on the crank gear and the oil pump. I have also heard of crank gear keys shearing.

Hate to say but you might have to pull the lower cover to make sure everything is kosher.

I haven't yet. I will do a compression test in the coming days. The timing belt was actually very loose and easily movable by touch, so if by some miracle it hasn't jumped time on the crank gear, I want to replace the timing belt before I crank it over at all. Thanks for all the suggestions guys! If y'all have any other random thoughts please post them

In that case, you will want to pull the covers off like you are going to do the timing belt job and try turning the engine by hand just to make sure there are no bent valves already. It'd suck to do all that work only to find out afterwards that you had bent valves.

If the valves are bent, you'd need to take the heads off to have them fixed before you put the new belt and water pump on there.

Oof. If the belt is that loose it will definitely be a miracle if it didn't jump...

You may have fuel coming through the filter but not making it to/or out of the injectors
