Default z24 vs ka24

Hey guys,
I recently sold my 87 z24 5 speed pickup. I loved the truck but it was using some oil and leaking some oil and didn't feel like fixing it. Well, now I am greatly regretting it. Anyway, I found a 1990 with 188k that I am assuming has the ka24. It is a automatic and needs a transmission so I can probably get it for pretty cheap ($1000). Is the KA the same motor that the z24 is, reliability and longevity wise? Is it worth buying the truck with that mileage and putting a transmission in it? I guess that is the big question.
Thanks!

Other than the timing chain guide issue the KA engine is likely much better than the Z engine in many ways if not all.

Whether it is worth fixing this truck is really based on your desire, ability and financial availability.

This truck will be just a get around truck and gas saver. So it would be in my interest to put a timing set on it? I can do the work myself, other than the trans rebuild, and the desire will come if it falls together for the right price. Cheaper is better.

A broken truck is hard to sell.

If he's asking $1000, start offering around $500. You never know how much you'll be spending to get that fixed. Tell yourself, "If it were an easy fix, he would have done it already."

I think the KA is supposed to be a more efficient and more powerful engine, but the lower powered Z engine (from what I hear) is bullet-proof. We'll have to talk Tally into firing a couple of .357 rounds into his to test that.

That's what I have always heard about the z24. Its a 1990 model with 188k and he's asking $1500 OBO. I called a transmission shop and they said count on a grand to rebuild the trans. I just don't really want to have anymore than $1800-$2000 in a truck with 200k on it when it is all said and done with. That may be unrealistic but I am just trying to get the best bang for my buck I guess.

Beating my self in the head for selling my 87....

I have always liked the Z24 over the Ka myself, ( have owned my truck since 87) oh a 44mag will put a silver dollar sized hole in the block, personal experience...

I have looked at all of those. I put power steering and A/C on my last hardbody because it came without it. It was a 87 base model with a z24. There are several in my area, most of them have the Ka, the z24 is becoming hard to find.

I had an 82 720 with the z24 engine and I dogged the living shit out of that truck. In the end it had phone books for seats and stop signs for floor panels I then sold it to my best friend for 500$ and it had 430,000 miles on it. He totaled it about 6 months later by going straight when the road forked. lol

Here is the link to this one. I have found several others that I will attach as well and let you guys tell me what you think. The red 1990 seems to be a motivated seller so I might can get it for pretty cheap.

These are my best options that appeal to me currently.
