That's a sharp-looking Xterra. Also a match to the truck. A bonus. What year of Xterra is it? Can you tell us anything else about it?

Looks like the beginning of a pattern in color, JP. Have you considered painting that very impressive 5th wheel red too? You know how I am about running with a theme, lol.

The 2008 is the Off Road version. It has the VQ40DE 4.0L V6, automatic, and 4 wheel drive.

The CarFax shows 3 owners.
  1. The first owner had it since 2013. During those 5 years, he averaged 13,761 miles/year and had a minor accident was reported 5/19/2011 - minor damage for left and right rear. It was towed, and the airbags did not deploy. It was offered for sale 3/15/2013 by David McDavid Houston Nissan with 69,680 miles. It sounds like the first owner had a 5-year note, and after it was paid off he traded it in on a new vehicle.
  2. The 2nd owner only had it for 5 months, but logged a whopping 15k miles during that short time. I imagine that person realized the fuel mileage wasn't going to work with the amount of driving required.
  3. The guy I bought it from has had it for 6-1/2 years, since 2014, where CarFax says he put 5,278 miles/year on it. He even told me that this was his toy that he took out wheeling, and the upgrades he did to it shows.
The guy I bought it from had a local mechanic do the timing chain job. Similar to the KA24e timing chain tensioner spring, the VQ40 has a minor flaw in the timing chain design that the owner learned about on forums and decided to have fixed. After having the work done, the engine had a vibration and was throwing code P0021 (Driver's side Intake Valve Timing Control Solenoid Failure, Bank 2). I verified this code with my own scan tool. P0021 is caused by a solenoid control failure or low/dirty oil. In rare cases, it can also occur after the timing chain is serviced if the chain is not correctly placed. That's what we both suspect.

Since his listing recommended the new owner tow it, I brought my trailer. I picked it up for $3000.

He already had a new Titan and a new Polaris 4x4 side-by-side, and his wife (the money-maker of the family) said that he needed to let go of the Xterra. She was actually listed as the owner on the title.

I really dig this red 2008, but my son likes the silver 2000 better. I'm guessing he understands that there are fewer consequences if he crashes the 2000 whenever he starts to drive. Also, he hit the pick-n-pull with me for the 2000, worked on it to fix some of the things it needed, and even drove it home whenever I bought it. There is probably some bond there.

I like this red one. Time will tell if it is a keeper or something I'll just fix and flip. It is supposed to get the same fuel mileage as the 2000, but it is a lot more powerful and has 4 wheel drive.

i had a 2002 Xterra before that i got for $700, i replaced alot of parts. the biggest issues i had what the oil burn, fuel economy (my F250 was better, i have a heavy foot) and the CEL for the crank position sensor. i later found out it was missing the shield for the sensor which was a problem if it wasnt there, giving me the CEL. i made my own out of a charcoal chimney shield. i sold it for 1100 and bought the HB a month later just before the COVID outbreak and that gave me time to rebuild and fix it.
