i’m on the fence about replacing my steering gearbox. my rag joint looks to be ok. it seems like the play in my steering when it’s parked looks to be in the box itself. i don’t know anyone in my area with a hardbody to compare to so i don’t know if mines bad. sorry OP, not trying to thread jack, just would like this steering shit figured out as mush as you would i’m sure lol.

My pathfinder gearbox is leaking.....bad. Replacing that is next on the list after the engine swap.

Mine was the same kind of bad with the leaking. My D21 was “acting” like a Harley and marking its spot wherever it went!
I was adding power steering fluid every day! The underside, frame and all of the components were oil soaked from all that lost oil dripping down and being pushed/blown back when I drove the truck at highway speeds. Just a lot of nasty goopy build up of oil, dust, dirt small rocks etc. Whatever could stick to the goop. It was on there. I also went through many pieces of cardboard that I placed under the truck. As bot to stain my concrete floor in my garage. It did stain the floor eventually. So I used painter’s plastic to create a “better” barrier. But now my floor is stained and I really hate my garage floor stained. Will probably need to blast it off or something. Can’t stand looking at those stains! Arrrrgh! |

![]() I'm the same way, but @ 10 years ago I had a major "old oil" booboo..... on creat and asphalt. Cleaned it the best I could, but never got it "right". I never lived that one down, for myself... but I'm now excessively careful when dealing with any liquids in the garage. ![]() ![]() |

Unfortunately, that Lares on R/A was only power steering. Not a lot of options for us manual steering guys haha. I will definitely have to look at that steering joint itself, I didn't even think to consider that. My Subaru had something similar and the joints would occasionally seize, steering would be super stiff and it would suddenly be easy to turn. Scared the hell outta me a few times in winter going around a turn.
